The winter season is upon us. It's a time of rest for the pond, yet as temperatures begin to drop, preventative winter pond maintenance is essential for fish health and survival. When water temperature drops below 55° a low protein wheat germ food prepares fish and koi for the long cold season. This reduces fish waste, improves pond water quality.

In winterizing fish ponds it is imperative to prevent ice buildup, which traps toxic gasses. Floating pond heaters such as Thermo Pond 3.0, the Farm Innovators Deicer and Pondmaster Heater reduces ice cover. In areas where winter can be particularly cold or for larger fishponds, pond aeration is recommended along with a pond heater. Should your pond freeze over, pour hot water on the ice to create a hole. Do NOT chip or hammer ice as this can shock and kill your fish.
